Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jagisha Sekhri, owner of Integrity Physiotherapy and Pelvic Health, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business helps women (at all stages of motherhood) with a core element of their daily well-being - Pelvic Health. It's pretty common for women to begin to pull back from their most favorite activities like running, jumping, etc., because their pelvic health deteriorates after they give birth or for other reasons like surgery. I give tools and education to help women get back to activities they love, and they don't have to fear pain or bladder leaks in these activities.

My mission is to make all mothers aware that they don't have to live with pelvic health issues. Unfortunately, given the way our health system works, women miss out on crucial support in avoiding pelvic health conditions or in keeping them from getting worse. This has led to the myth that pelvic health issues are a normal part of becoming a mother. The reality, however, is that these issues might be common, but they are definitely not normal.

My own journey of giving birth through a C-section procedure and the poor focus on pelvic health recovery gave me a solid reason to advance my Physiotherapy practice into pelvic health specialization. I count uncovering the underlying causes of symptoms as one of my superpowers, and I believe in treating them with facilitation, core activation, and exercises focused on those underlying causes. This is what has helped my clients gain long-term benefits and enhance the integrity of their bodies. The satisfaction that comes with helping my clients build a lifestyle of their choice is what gets me out of bed each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I take great pride in how I leverage technology and social media to raise awareness about pelvic health issues. It was also early in the pandemic that I started to help clients in a hybrid (online+physical) model and helped women as far out as Thunder Bay (1500 kms from where I live).

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Dealing with the unknowns. As an example, a seemingly minor change in how Facebook allows you to post ads and messages completely messes up your social media strategy. And if your business depends on people walking in the door, there is always the chance of a no-show or a scheduling issue that creates holes in your calendar.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Block enough time to think before you start to execute.
  2. Know when to say No so you can stay focused.
  3. Ramp up your technical knowledge to help you accelerate your growth and increase your market visibility.
