Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business consulting and services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joshua Foster, Founder, and CEO of JAFCS, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

JAF Creative Solutions (JAFCS) is a community-impact-focused strategic partnership and engagement consultancy firm empowering clients with the tools to maximize impact. We offer services catered towards community engagement for architecture and design firms, real estate development companies, non-profit organizations, and small businesses that are committed to doing work in underserved communities of color.

Tell us about yourself

A native of the Philadelphia area, a seasoned New Yorker, and now a settled Angeleno, I spent the early years of my career focusing on designing and constructing affordable and market-rate housing projects in Los Angeles County. Combining that experience with my education in Real Estate Development and connection to communities, I transformed my experiences into the founding of JAF Creative Solutions (JAFCS).

My engagement and interactions with those around me motivate and inspire me daily. Through JAFCS, I am building an efficient process of authentic engagement outcomes and tangible community impact returns that extends beyond the design and development world through intentional grassroots communication strategies and active implementation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is not only surviving but thriving past the first full year in business and doing so in a way where I did not compromise the integrity or mission of my business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is riding the waves of quietness. What I mean by quietness are the long and short moments when you may not have much activity in your business. Making sure to stay focused in those moments are key.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. The diameter of your knowledge is based on the circumference of your community. Expanding your own community to a diversity of thought is how you grow as an entrepreneur.
  2. Some of your biggest accomplishments will happen in moments when you are willing to be flexible and adapt to the moment in front of you.
  3. Success and impact do not follow a strict path but are the unscripted culmination of how we each deal with the highs and lows of our unique daily journeys. Appreciate the good and the bad because every lesson will make you a better entrepreneur tomorrow.
