Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Jacquilen Tomas, Ali, ND, Founder of Earthly Essence, located in Philadelphia, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As a Naturopathic Physician, I started my practice by emphasizing nutrition, herbs, and living a healthy, holistic lifestyle.  That worked well but I noticed that there were clients who were doing “everything right”, however, their problems didn’t go away completely.  Once I understood the true essence of who we are, my focus shifted to addressing the causes of health challenges. I was introduced to an energy, consciousness-based system called The BodyTalk System®.  The BodyTalk System® includes the following Healthcare Modalities, Scientific Principles, and Philosophies, i.e., Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Dynamic Systems Theory, Western Medicine, Yogic Philosophy, and Quantum Physics.  With BodyTalk, I am able to connect to the energy of the person (using Kinesiology) and ask the body what it needs to help it heal and balance whether it’s physical mental, emotional or environmental.

Tell us about yourself

I was a classroom teacher, working with students who had special learning needs.  My intention was to do this as my life’s career.  However, I received a “call” that it was time to move on to something else.  I worked in the pharmaceutical industry and the healthcare field as an administrator and during this time received another “call” to study Naturopathy.   I LOVED IT, but it was a lot of work!!!   I had to complete clinical studies as part of the program.  I worked with my husband and parents who all had cancer (different types and stages).  I was amazed and excited about the positive results I witnessed and documented.  My instructors were excited as well.  I realized that all I had experienced in my career were steppingstones towards this outcome.  I love what I do; that’s what motivates me to move forward!!!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is being able to informally connect with other practitioners who offered services that I could participate in and refer my clients to.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

You gotta love what you do!  People can tell if you really want to help them, or if you are in it just to make money.  Consistency is key, however, be willing to evolve and grow.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. PATIENCE!!!
  2. PATIENCE!!!
  3. PATIENCE!!!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

“No matter how educated, talented, rich, or cool you believe you are, how you treat people ultimately tells all.  INTEGRITY IS EVERYTHING”
