What's your business, and who are your customers?
I help individuals maintain the motivation necessary for accomplishing their fitness goals through online personal training services, online courses, content creation, and one-on-one coaching. I also collaborate with fitness brands to create informative and engaging content for their social media channels!
Tell us about yourself
I am a full-time student at Purdue University studying kinesiology with a concentration in clinical exercise physiology, minoring in psychology, and I will be attending The Mayo Clinic College of Medicine & Science next year to pursue my doctorate in physical therapy. I love to exercise, and I am fascinated with the psychological topic of motivation. I started my business during the lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic. I was a newly certified personal trainer who was passionate about helping people achieve their goals with no prospects for a job since all the gyms were closed. I started writing workout programs for my friends and family for fun (my first workout program was for my grandmother). Eventually, they started telling their friends and family members about how much they enjoyed the workout programs, and it grew organically from there. I also started a social media page where I posted at-home workouts, fitness tips, and workout challenges for people to try.
Eventually, the social media pages I consistently posted to gained some traction, and the next thing I knew, I had clients from all over the world, and businesses began reaching out to me for partnership opportunities. Eventually, I developed a framework for building and maintaining the motivation necessary for accomplishing one's fitness goals in the form of an online course titled 'Map to Motivation.' I have been fortunate enough to work with hundreds of people in the past 3 years to build the healthy habits and mindset necessary to accomplish their fitness goals. I cannot wait to continue to reach even more people in the future.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
It's hard to pinpoint a specific accomplishment that sticks out to me because I feel accomplished whenever one of my clients tells me about their progress or when I receive a message about my social media content or online course and how it has positively impacted someone's life. When I set out to start this business, my only hope was that I could help people achieve their fitness and wellness goals, so I feel very accomplished when I receive that feedback.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Making sacrifices. Being a young entrepreneur and a full-time student in college, I have had to miss out on the stereotypical college lifestyle that everyone around me seems to live. It can be challenging at times when all my friends are hanging out, and I am working with a client or working on a project. That's not to say I am never able to spend time with my friends, but perhaps not as often as I would hope. Sometimes that is challenging for me, but other times I love being in such a productive and focused flow state that I wouldn't have it any other way.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Take massive action. If you have something you're passionate about and there is a need to fulfill, get after it! Don't let fear hold you back!
- Become a lifelong learner if you aren't already. Your business will never be perfect in your eyes, and there will always be challenges and obstacles along the way. With a growth mindset, you have to believe that there is always room for improvement and always room to make progress. So keep educating yourself, ask people for help, and utilize the resources around you.
- The client or customer comes first. My business started because of how pleased my close friends and family members were with the workout programs I developed. My business continued to grow because of how satisfied my clients were. If you want to start a business solely for the money and have no intentions of helping improve someone's life in any capacity, you will fizzle out very quickly.
