Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in family development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jaci Finneman, Founder of No-Problem Parenting™, located in St. Augusta, MN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

No-Problem Parenting™, Become the Confident Leader Your Kids Crave You to Be! Parents who are giving in to their child to keep the peace or constantly consequencing their kids are tired of parenting out of fear and frustration. They are parents that have little support from friends or family and just want some no-nonsense, realistic, practical resources that work at the moment as the behaviors are happening so that they can be the loving, energetic parent they always thought they would be!

Tell us about yourself

I was an In-Home Family Counselor for 20 years for children who were diagnosed with a variety of mental health disorders. I realized that if I could help the parents to understand why their kiddos were behaving the way they were, and I could empower them to feel confident that they were their own child's expert, they could help their kids and the kid's need for external support would decrease and sometimes be eliminated altogether. So I left the counseling field and became a parent coach. Now, I help parents discover the root of their child's behavior, help them "prepare for the worst" so that they are equipped to respond vs. react and then naturally change the conversation with their kids, which creates greater trust and respect between the parent and child.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Reaching parents from all over the world in their homes (via zoom) without the additional cost of driving to an appointment, finding daycare for their kids, or taking time off of work. I have been meeting virtually with families for over five years, and it is time and money-saving. Parents get results after just the first session! When I first shared with other professionals that I was having zoom meetings with my clients, their response was, " that's never gonna work, too impersonal, and it won't work." I'm glad I did it anyway. I have met parents from around the globe and have connected with new resources that I can share with all my followers and clients.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The ebb and flow of clients and working "alone." I definitely welcomed the quiet and aloneness when I first took the leap and left my 20-year career as a counselor and coordinator of a clinical team of over 80 therapists and counselors. A few years into my now nine years since starting my company, I missed the case consultation with my colleagues and realized I missed the collaboration and networking.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Build a team of support outside of your friends and family. Join networking groups and hire a coach but be sure the coach has supported people in your specific industry with success.
  2. Set working hours. You will work day and night, especially if you are not bringing in consistent revenue. Create regular meetings for yourself to review your budget, marketing, client appt hours, networking, lunch, etc. Do this as you would if you were working for someone else.
  3. Pay yourself first. I wish I had read Profit First when I started my company. I put everything (and more) into building my business and expanding my reach, and learning more and more about how to do everything on my own. Instead, had I paid myself; first, there wouldn't have been money to dump into programs and systems that I really didn't need. Or, it would've taken longer for me to afford the shiny program that was calling me to "try it," resulting in fewer spur-of-the-moment shiny object syndrome purchases.
