Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with J. Epperson, Founder of J A Epperson Analysis & Advisory, located in Las Vegas, NV, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is people. People who have a desire and the motivation to change. People who actually want to become something more. People who want to start a business and build a legacy that will outlive themselves.

Tell us about yourself

I started my business in 1983 when I was determined to use what I had learned to help others. While working inside corporate organizations, I watched and learned what type of people were successful leaders and who were "scoundrels." Those who made an effort to meaningfully impact their colleagues while building a product or providing a service and those who simply came to work each day wondering what was for lunch and when they could go home. I'm motivated each day to think of ways to improve people's lives and find something in the process which is beneficial to me as well. I wrote a book in 2017 titled "My XYZ's of Leadership - 26 Days to Excellence in Business Leadership and Life." I then created an online course, "One Day at a Time," which incorporated the principles found in the book to create a daily course for business owners and managers for personal DIY change.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping people become better.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Getting people to act and then paying me for my efforts to help them. I can control what I do, but I have little control over people who have no desire or motivation to improve their lives.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, assess and acknowledge who you are and what you are passionate about. Second, using that assessment to determine a product or service to create, visualize what success with that product will look like. Then mentally walk back from that outcome to this moment to right now. Look at each milestone passed as you come back in time to the present. Once you can see the path created in your mind, begin building daily, weekly, and monthly tasks and milestones to get yourself back out to the visualized successful end result.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

It all begins with you. Begin to believe and then begin to become. Do good, be nice, do nice, become better. Understand that the old adage of "good people finish last" is false. The best people are the only ones really winning.
