Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jake Williams and Sekajipo Taplah, founders of Ivy Brothers, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Ivy Brothers is a college admissions startup that provides data-driven counseling - passion projects, research, application & essay reviews, hooks, and internships. We create outliers through our traditional Ivy Brothers program and 8houses.com. Our main customers are students who want to get into a top university.

Tell us about yourself

We saw a lot of misinformation in the college admission process and started the company to combat this. Every day we're motivated to accelerate the world's top talents and create more outliers that get into top schools and progress humanity.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment is getting our first few clients into an Ivy. The joy on their faces and gratitude cannot be replicated.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is being able to test your assumptions; as a business owner, you don't know if a new initiative will work or if your pricing is proper. There's an art and science to testing your assumptions with minimum friction.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Focus 80% or more of your time on sales and products. If you're not growing and improving your offering, your business will decay.
  2. Prioritize action over inaction. Getting something done is better than thinking about it and having an issue grow.
  3. Continuously learn and improve your craft and invest in learning, so your business stays competitive.
