Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Victorina Wong, founder of ITMT- Int'l Teams Mission Toronto, located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are not-for-profit organizations focusing on sharing the gospel in Canada by bringing experience missionaries on a short-term mission for 2-3 months. In Canada and overseas (Philippines, Indonesia, and India), we have ITMT Women In Motion project to help teenage mothers to feed, educate, empower and mentor them.

Tell us about yourself

I was sponsored child by World Vision for many years, from age six until I graduated college; I have been sponsoring children in the past, sending out (means of financial support) young people to mission fields during their school vacation in Canada to a different part of the world. Mission and helping people are and will always be part of me.

I supported a number of students (privately) to send them to school from primary until college graduation and send or bring family members to Canada and their families.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As business owners, seeing our clients enjoy the service we provide and repeat business from them. Also, the people that our company brought in to Canada, most of them become Canadian citizens, have their own family or brought their family to Canada, purchase a home, and some have their own business as well. For me, more than anything else, this gives me fulfillment and accomplishment in what I do.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

We all know that the hardest part is paying an employee's salary and other expenses when there is no money coming in., Also, letting go of an unproductive employee is one of my biggest challenges.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know what you want; what is it that you DESIRE to do besides making money.
  2. Look for a mentor that can help you grow and navigate obstacles in your business.
  3. Be resilient and agile, don't get stuck when something goes wrong, seek help if needed

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

The REWARD of being a business is sweet; however, one must be willing to work hard and sacrifice to make it happen. Work hard now and play later or play now and pay later.
