What's your business, and who are your customers?
Investor Crate is a precious metals subscription crate that deals in gold, silver, platinum, and 90% "junk" silver. We specialize in coins, bars, and rounds. Our customers are gold & silver stackers, investors, and collectors.
Tell us about yourself
My name is Tyler Robinson, and I started "roll hunting" and buying precious metals while I served in the U.S. Army. When I left the Army, I started opening small businesses, most of which were unsuccessful. The ones that did succeed were in industries I had no passion for, and this was a driving factor in my initial attempt at the precious metals industry.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Simply becoming a business owner. I had so many failures as a young entrepreneur; while I don't have an exact number off the top of my head, I had created at least a dozen businesses that failed.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Two things come to mind. Learning and doing everything from social media, marketing, customer support, accounting, web design, et cetera. And creating a schedule/regiment that you stick to and are accountable for.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- My first tip is the most important, and it's long-term consistency. Make a schedule and stick to it with 100% accuracy. Post on social every day, create and post blogs regularly, talk to customers daily, et cetera. Just do everything you know you suppose to be doing and do this for years until you can replace yourself with people who can take on these roles. I can not stress this enough!!
- Tip 2, never stop learning and implementing what you've learned. A big lesson for me as a marketer, especially, is that some things I might like or dislike, and others don't. As in, some marketing tactic might seem stupid to me but is wildly effective in terms of conversion. Don't just read advice; quickly have a biased opinion on it and disregard it.
- This brings me to tip 3. Data. Everything can be tracked, so if you've learned something new, implement it and track the data behind it. Maybe it makes sense for your application, or maybe it doesn't, but find and focus on the things that truly work and disregard the things that don't.
