Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicholas Miller, President of Integrated Fitness, located in Davie, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our vision for the company is to be innovators in the fitness and medical space that closes the wellness gap between chronic pain/disease and physically/mentally fit quality of life for those who desire a lifestyle without limitations, having multiple locations and leading the market with continuous growth in Florida by 2025. Our main purpose is to change the way people approach health and fitness by integrating a complete wellness solution.

We also have a strategy of becoming the leading team of elite fitness and medical professionals in Florida, offering a hybrid approach we call The Integrated Fitness Solution that solves a market problem by helping higher-risk individuals eliminate or dramatically reduce their pain levels so they can workout effectively and get into the best shape possible by 2023. - Mission accomplished, by the way.

Tell us about yourself

I've always wanted to help higher-risk individuals with pre-existing limitations improve their quality of life and get into the best shape possible. I figured out how to do this from personal challenges and experiences as an athlete having many injuries and pain as I got older. It's statistically known that almost 100 million people in the US eventually have pain, injury and develop disease over time. Especially when we become 40/50+ in age. I found that by integrating a team approach of private physical therapy and personal training on a one-on-one basis collaborating, and developing a safe, effective program design that eliminates the problems and frustrations of a traditional gym and run-of-the-mill clinics works phenomenally. Our clients get a team of degreed and certified fitness professionals working with Doctors of Physical Therapy to improve their quality of life. There is no better team approach.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to convert from a contractor-based model, that in my opinion, is very flawed for many reasons, to an aligned, employee-driven, systems-based company that has been able to thrive based on its continual development and team atmosphere.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

A mentor of mine once told me that the reason businesses don't work is because the owners do. And what he meant by the comment was that business owners get stuck wearing way too many hats, doing most if not all the work, and never get to enjoy the reasons for opening a business in the first place. I was one of those business owners. I was stuck in the trenches for years until I learned to develop a team aligned with a common vision and delegate decisions by trusting in my team to get the job done. I don't have it all figured out by any means, and I'm still learning how to focus on the right kind of work that will propel my company forward where everyone in the organization can benefit.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have a Vision. It may sound corny or cliche, but a ship without a direction can be lost for a long time.
  2. Think who, not how. Ask yourself the question, who is going to help this company thrive? Then develop them for success. If all you ask is how, more than likely, you will always be the one doing the work.
  3. Read. Read as many leadership books as you can. I'd say I read a book per month. Once I started this self-developing tactic, I was able to see my business through a different lens a lead others to become a better version of themselves. Which is where I get my satisfaction at this point
    seeing my team succeed.
