Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Aimee Bloom, founder of Inspired Living NW, located in Portland, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Inspired Living NW. We offer professional organizing services in the Portland area. To create meaningful change, I use a coach-like approach when working with all clients. My goal is to model transferrable skills so that clients can grow and learn as we organize their space. Regardless of their living situation, each individual client receives customized care, attention, and support to create the life they truly want. This process honors the vision of themselves that makes them feel most at home - both in their space and in their mind and spirit.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Aimee, and I am the owner of Portland, OR-based Inspired Living NW. I'm a professional organizer, coach, and educator! My passion is helping individuals and families create peace through the organization.

My background is in mental health and early childhood education. I was a former early intervention teacher to children with special needs and also worked with the houseless community. These experiences were so formative for me, and I still use many skills from those years in working with my organizing clients.

I am motivated by the belief that organization is achievable for everyone. When we let go of items that are weighing us down, we find the freedom to focus on who we truly want to be. I have been a witness to the incredible changes that this process allows, and I am constantly in awe of my wonderful clients!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I believe that my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is in the tremendous progress, effort, and growth that my clients have shown over our time working together. They are proof that this work is meaningful and healing, and it's what gives me the encouragement and motivation to continue!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being an entrepreneur is figuring out how to create structure and balance between work and life. As business owners, it's easy to feel like your business is an extension of yourself and to pour absolutely everything into it. But that is not healthy or sustainable. Instead, it's critical to curate a life that represents who you are and also makes space for growth and healthy habits. That's the only way to avoid burnout!

In a way, that's what I do for my clients as well. When we create space for the things we want (calm, peace of mind, less clutter), that's what we receive. As a business owner, no one else is going to do that work for you! It's one of the tough lessons that every entrepreneur needs to learn on their own. Once you do learn it, though, you never forget!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ask yourself, who can I get on board to help me? When you outsource expertise to others, it only brings more business. That could mean a coach, marketing support, therapist, or mentor, to name a few. When we rely on others, we make space for what we truly love and want to do.
  2. A wise person once said, "if you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?" Setting up processes like a secure password system, file naming conventions, and standard operating procedures will save you a huge headache down the road when your business begins to grow and scale.
  3. Remember that there is no problem between today and a good night's sleep that can't be solved!
