Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Melissa Sunshine, Founder of Insight BioFitness, located in Boise, ID, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am Melissa Sunshine of Insight BioFitness. Most of my clients are people who are experiencing chronic illness in the form of an auto-immune disorder and are looking to lose weight, sleep better and increase energy. I also work with anyone looking to improve their lifestyle through nutrition and movement.

Tell us about yourself

I have been on a non-stop quest to find wellness since 1999. I have been diagnosed with a number of auto-immune disorders, including psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic EBV, severe allergies, and most recently, MS. Though I have had a few wonderful healers/doctors in my life, most of what I have discovered about health has been on my own. Through trial and error, I have spent years tweaking my diet, fitness, and mentality.

I studied Psychology and Education in college and then went on to become a Certified Personal Trainer, Nutritionist, Yoga Teacher, Corrective Exercise Specialist, and finally, a Genetics Based Program Designer. I am inspired by my clients' bravery to work through chronic illness and move toward health and healing.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was just getting started. I honestly had no intention of running or owning a business. I realized how excited I would get when friends or family asked for my help or advice about their health and decided, why not? I launched Insight BioFitness in 2020 and had no idea it would take off the way that it did.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Publicity. I am an introvert to my core, and it's difficult to write and use social media for marketing myself. I have many days that I just do not want to sit in front of my computer, write and post. Working with my clients is great, but I have to put myself out there in order to find them.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stop researching and take action! You can spend forever making plans, studying, and trying to get everything perfect before you launch, but don't. Start now.
  2. Find peers. Having at least one person who does what you do or something similar can be an amazing asset. You can support each other, and they may have an idea that you haven't thought of.
  3. Get a coach. Seriously. If you don't know what to do to get started, or if you are not where you want to be, find someone to teach you. It is worth your investment.
