Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in web designing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Krystianna Pietrzak, Founder of Inkpot Creative, located in Denver, CO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Inkpot Creative is a website design studio that combines strategic user experience and beautifully clever design. Our customers are inclusive changemakers who want to stand out in their industry. We primarily work with a lot of photographers, coaches, copywriters, and other creatives!

Tell us about yourself

I'm KP, she/her/hers, and I'm the founder of Inkpot Creative. I founded the business in 2020 after graduating from college with a dual B.A. in Graphic Design & Media Arts that spring. I initially planned on traveling after graduating college, but COVID put a bit of a pin in that, so I ended up going back to my love of layout design instead.

My motivation is the freedom that running my own business can provide. As someone who absolutely loves to travel, I love to bring the same feeling of travel into my designs. You know when you visit a new place for the first time, and there's something interesting almost everywhere you look? That's what I aim to do with my websites for my clients!

Running my own business allows me to travel whenever I'd like to, set timelines that work within my schedule, and really have the freedom to set my own pace. It's what I love most about running my own business!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was earlier this year; I was able to scale enough to have my girlfriend leave her full-time job to work with me at Inkpot Creative. She now helps with all things website development and project management, which has allowed me to focus more on the creative aspects of the business. Plus, it means that now we are both able to travel more!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think many people don't realize how lonely being a business owner can be. Yes, I have my girlfriend who works with me now, but at times it can truly feel like you're the only one going through what you're going through. It's super important to try to make online business friends because, at the end of the day, we are all one big community that should be lifting each other up.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start. Nothing has to be perfect in the beginning, and you truly will figure things out as you go. So many people want to start their own businesses but don't because of the fear of starting. You don't have to have everything figured out in the beginning. All I had was my business name and my service!
  2. Get your processes sorted early on. We have in-depth project portals that we created using Notion that we use to share project timelines and tasks with all of our clients from the second that they sign their contracts. This also allows them to know what's going on at any given time in their project.
  3. Don't be afraid to switch things up! Now more than ever, being different is what will make you stand out. Find what makes you unique and really push that in your marketing - people will notice!
