What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a business coach and consultant with specialties in 2 areas. In my coaching practice, I work with producers, managers, and leaders who are seeking growth in their roles and companies. I also work with fitness professionals who are launching, scaling, or rejuvenating their businesses. In my consulting practice, I work with service-based organizations to assess their readiness for change, deliver strategic recommendations, and support implementation in areas of communication and training. I'm a continuous learner, and I share that passion with my clients.
Tell us about yourself
I started my career with 20+ years in the fitness industry, starting as a personal trainer, moving into management, training trainers as L&D faculty, and owning my own personal training studio. Just prior to the pandemic, I'd started a graduate program, earning both my MBA and MS in Organizational Leadership. At the same time, I'd jumped into Educational Technology sales, helping Science teachers and their students to learn via virtual simulations as their access to physical labs was limited. Today, I'm an Adjunct Faculty member, teaching MBA students in addition to coaching and consulting. Being able to apply my hybrid experiences to help make a meaningful impact on my clients keeps me excited and engaged each day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishments aren't my own. They're the accomplishments of my clients. While we set realistic and long-term goals, we make sure to celebrate the smaller, short-term wins along the way. It's a great way to keep the momentum!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I remind myself and my clients of this often. In today's remote world, it's easy to get lost in work without coming up for air often enough. That air can be literal as in getting away from our desks and outside for a walk and some sunlight. And it can be social, as in spending time with family or friends in communities that fuel our personal passions. Sometimes, it's nice to combine the 2 in meeting clients, in person, or over coffee. It's a big world, and it's important to see more of it than your laptop screen.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Take the time to plan. Business planning sometimes gets a bad rep, as critics will say what you've put on paper won't be the same as what occurs when you start. I've found that the process of business planning allows you to think more critically about your goals, obstacles, and the business environment. You'll be better able to adjust to what does happen because you were thoughtful at the start.
- Take action. Gone are the days of working for one company for 40 years. And, with the high incidence of layoffs in many industries, job security is questionable. Bet on yourself, and start that side hustle (as an official business). You don't have to go all-in right from the start, though you may find that it can be the constant you need and one that will grow over time.
- You don't have to go it alone. Seek conversations. Seek mentors. Seek coaches. Seek community. Entrepreneurship can be a lonely road, sometimes. Having others that you can turn to talk shop with and get advice from can be the fuel that powers you in this marathon. Stick around long enough, and soon you'll find that you'll be giving back, helping to mentor others who are in the same shoes you were in not long ago.
