Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Heather McBride, Founder of InClarity360, located in Eugene, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

In the past, I have given the 5-second elevator answer - I am a resume writer. But, I have realized that I am a resume and career strategist assisting skilled professionals in securing a job and compensation worthy of their experience.

Tell us about yourself

First and foremost, I love what I do. Before creating and building InClarity360, I was a human resource and recruiting professional. In this 25-year career, I supported managers in employee hiring and performance management. In this capacity, it became apparent that excellent hiring and onboarding practices were the keys to a successful employee and team experience. Instead of managing employee relations issues in the workplace, my desire evolved into wanting to help good people match with good companies. And that is exactly what I get to do every day. I am honored to work with clients who are focused on channeling their background, skills, experience, and passion into a role that excites them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment happens every single time a client calls and tells me, "I got the job!" It thrills me to hear these words and the excitement and hope in their voice. It makes everything I do worthwhile.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Before starting InClarity360, I enjoyed a scheduled paycheck that allowed me to budget consistently. As a business owner, income isn't on a regular schedule. I had to adjust, plan and budget around fluctuation. It has been a huge learning experience.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you are just getting started, take advantage of free and low-cost marketing resources available, such as Google Business listings and Weebly (website). These will allow you to get your feet wet and figure out what works or doesn't before spending a lot of money.
  2. Create a Linkedin profile and maximize all of its options, including creating a separate business page, skill/keyword optimization, and asking connections and past clients for testimonials.
  3. Ask your clients for Google Reviews. These reviews truly help prospective clients decide who to call.
