Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with David Stevens, Founder of IGWorks, Inc., located in San Clemente, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

IGWorks® stands for Indoor Garden Works. We sell innovative, sustainable, attractive, and easy-to-use products that make it easy to grow your own food in the comfort of your home. All of our products are designed to be beautiful and convenient enough to use in our customers’ living rooms. Our customers are extremely diverse, but all enjoy the idea of growing food beautifully in their homes, no matter how small it is.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve lived in apartments for most of my life, without outdoor space to garden. And I knew that there were tons of people out there just like me, or who perhaps could not garden outdoors for other reasons, including weather, space, and time. Developing the iHarvest® was a way to share my passion with others, and I’m constantly motivated by the enjoyment that my customers get from using something that I invented and made for sharing with the world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Certainly, I’m very happy that IGWorks® is growing year over year. But what gives me the most satisfaction is having customers tell us (or others) how much they love our products and customer service. I don’t know if that sounds like some sort of a pitch, but that is truly what makes me happy and gives me the greatest sense of accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Developing a startup is a difficult, risky and stressful endeavor. As a business owner, there’s always that voice in the back of your head telling you that if you’re not the hardest working person out there, you might end up out of work entirely.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Surround yourself as much as possible with positive people that believe in you.
  2. Put your problem-solving hat on and never take it off because you will need it over and over again.
  3. Believe in yourself
