What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a Human Resource and Indigenous Relations Consultant. For Human Resources services, any business can be my client, primarily small to medium size businesses that may not have an HR department yet. For Indigenous Relations services, my clients are businesses that work on traditional Indigenous lands like oil & gas service companies.
Tell us about yourself
When I first entered the workforce, I had a lot of bad bosses. This was why I returned to university as an adult working full-time and received my Bachelor of Management Degree with a major in Human Resources and Labour Relations. I have been on a quest to improve workplaces and make companies happily profitable.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Every small business I help create a healthy work environment is a big accomplishment for me! Happy employees are the most important thing for any business!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Learning to be a marketer first as you build your business is hard. You are an expert in your field, but you have to get customers or clients first.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
If you're a consultant like me: First, learn how to market to your target client. Second, build your networks by sharing your knowledge a little. Third, find referral partners and sign proper mutually beneficial referral agreements.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Keep your day job until your business can give you a regular income.
