Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in content creation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sabrina Ricci, Podcaster of I Know Dino, located in San Francisco, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I Know Dino: The Big Dinosaur Podcast is a popular weekly show about dinosaurs. We cover all the latest dinosaur discoveries (there’s a new one each week!), interview paleontologists, paleoartists, and other dinosaur experts, and do deep dives into specific dinosaurs with our “dinosaur of the day” segment. And we cover topics such as what makes a dinosaur a dinosaur.

Our listeners are mainly adults like us who are curious and passionate. We all enjoy learning about and talking about dinosaurs and science in general. Dinosaurs are a gateway to science, after all.

Tell us about yourself

We grew up loving dinosaurs. Like many kids, our interests changed as teenagers. But we rediscovered our love of dinosaurs together as adults when we lived near the American Museum of Natural History, and we were able to visit often.

A few years later, we had a dinosaur-themed wedding. After the wedding, we wanted to keep talking about dinosaurs. At the time, there were (and still are) some great paleontology podcasts, but there weren’t any dedicated to dinosaurs. So we decided to start our podcast.

Our listeners motivate us. We’ve built an amazing community of dinosaur enthusiasts, and we’ve connected with so many wonderful people through our show. Listeners have told us our podcast has reignited their love of dinosaurs and science.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment is being able to podcast as our full-time job. It took years of hard work, and it was worth every moment. We love the people we’ve gotten to meet because of the podcast, the experiences we’ve had (like celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary in the Outback of Australia and chatting with new dino friends), and all the things we’ve learned.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

You can’t pursue every opportunity: you need to pick and choose. Sometimes you have to say “no” in order to meet your big goals, and that’s OK.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. When you’re interested in something, just go for it. Build up your skills however you can and apply them to your project. You can turn anything into an opportunity.
  2. Connect with people. You can learn so much from your listeners, your clients, and your partners. It doesn’t have to all be purely about business, either.
  3. Don’t forget to have fun. You started a business because you believe in it, and it’s something you’re passionate about. Enjoy the journey.
