Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Steve Weiss, Founder of Hurricane Marketing Enterprises, located in Manalapan Township, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We support Home Care Businesses from Creation through Exiting. We help our clients:

  • Open and start a new agency.
  • Scale and grow that agency (hiring and managing staff, recruiting caregivers, marketing for new patients, staffing and managing the patient, financial, processes, etc.).
  • We help our clients successfully sell and exit their business.

Tell us about yourself

I got into doing this consulting by owning my agency over a decade ago. Having had the real-world experience of scaling and growing my own company and then selling it gives me insights into how to help others have the same and even greater success.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to have clients in all 50 states and 6other countries outside the USA (Canada, Mexico, Australia, UK, Spain, and Ireland).

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Betrayal from someone you trusted. No doubt. When you put a lot of effort into someone (staff or client), and they turn around and stab you in the back (slander you and your company in some way), it hurts and cuts so deep. You need thick skin to make it today, and you need to expect the unexpected. Simultaneously, you cannot hold that against everyone else. Each person and situation is different, so you do not carry over a bad experience with one another.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Have resources (money) to get started. More than you think, start-up costs plus first-year operating income. This will give you the necessary cushion to make it a success.
  2. Find a consultant who knows what they are doing and invest in the training necessary to shorten the time it takes to become profitable.
  3. Hire for ATTITUDE more than SKILL. You can always train someone on what to do, but you can't train a bad attitude!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Make sure you have the burning desire for your business. If your heart is not in it, you most likely will fail. But if you LOVE what you're doing, you will be able to make it through the difficulty of starting up and thriving for years to come, completely changing your life in the process.
