Tell us all about your business...

Conduct workplace investigations, mediations, workplace restoration, and coaching, plus customized training.

What's your background and motivation to grow as a solopreneur?

As the Principal of the AVIARY GROUP, mediation, training, coaching, and development organization, I offer a comprehensive range of "people-focused" expertise. I have investigated and mediated many disputes since 1984, ranging from single-issue interpersonal issues to complex matters involving systemic discrimination and policy reviews. Worked on differences in workplace situations (including harassment and discrimination) within a wide range of areas, including municipal, provincial and federal governments, including health care, social service agencies, police forces, the military, fire services, prisons, and community organizations, as well as the corporate sector. I have provided training in diverse subject areas and am a specialist in workplace equality. I have worked with many different clients as a mediator, resolving intercultural and employment conflicts. Conducted mediations internationally on global human rights issues.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I combine a positive attitude, superior communication skills, and talent for creativity with humor and great stories while seeking the whole picture but focusing on the individual's needs. Bringing excellent presentation and facilitation skills demonstrated through the delivery of numerous training seminars. I have shown an ability to present and discuss ideas and information clearly and concisely. My sensitivity and understanding of excellence allow me to succeed in counseling and coaching sessions with individuals aspiring to be their best.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a solopreneur?

Working independently without a physical team being present to bounce ideas off.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?

Network, publish, and network. Reach out without expecting something back all the time.

Why I named the company Aviary Group...Twenty-five years ago, founder Monika B. Jensen marveled at the beautiful way her 12 parrots shed their colorful plumage to rejuvenate, discarding imperfections to grow and settle their difference in unique ways. Inspired by their grace, the Aviary Group has given organizations wings since 1996, guiding our clients through their transformations. We offer various services, including policy reviews and development, mediation and conflict resolution, fact-finding and investigations, and executive coaching and training. Our goal is to maximize organizations' top resources: their people. Our wide range of subject matter expertise may not be available or necessary within most organizations, and we're more than happy to share our resources. Offering practical, comprehensive, and personalized coaching and training, we provide the knowledge and tools vital to creating a prosperous and harmonious workplace. With over 35 years of experience in the public and private sectors, our commitment to understanding and facilitating organizational and individual change is foremost.
