Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Howard Fine, Founder of The Howard Fine Acting Studio, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a professional acting studio focused on giving artists the tools they need to establish and sustain a career in a highly competitive industry. Our customers range from those just starting out to Oscar and Emmy Award-winning actors.

Tell us about yourself

I was fortunate to have an outstanding drama teacher in high school who spotted my directing talent and gave me my first play to direct at age 16. She taught from Uta Hagen's first book, Respect for Acting. She later became a close colleague and mentor of mine. Although I had to train as an actor in college and graduate school, I knew early on that my true talent was as a teacher/coach. I love being part of an actor's journey.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The feeling of community we strive to create is my favorite part of our trademark as a business. Competition among actors is discouraged at my studio. I love seeing actors helping each other with auditions and providing a network of support.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I am fortunate to have 2 brilliant administrators, Becky Cloe and Ian Cardoni. They do the leg work of responding to emails and keeping social media in shape. They shoulder the burden of keeping everything running so that I get to focus on the part that I love, which is the actual teaching.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Make sure that you have acquired the knowledge and credentials that you will need. Be willing to work for others before endeavoring to launch your own enterprise. Surround yourself with good people who will disagree with you and offer honest advice. Make sure that you do not expand too quickly. Keep demand high.
