Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stacie Simfukwe, owner of Household 6 Catering, LLC., located in Fayetteville, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Household 6 Catering is an online bakery and mobile kitchen specializing in light and delicious gourmet granola. Our mobile kitchen's menu is based on brunch. All of our ingredients are fresh, wholesome, and delicious! Our menu ranges from creamy grits with goat cheese to our light, crispy granola made fresh daily. We know you will love brunchin' with us. We are a military family-owned and run business that loves our community.

Tell us about yourself

This business started due to morning sickness. Being a military family, we were stationed in a place that didn't have a variety of granola flavors. Granola was the only thing I could keep down. So, I started experimenting with different recipes and flavors. Finally, I came up with a base recipe that worked out great. That started the first four flavors,
Piña Colada, Chocolate Almond Coconut, Oatmeal & Fruit, and Honey Almond.

A few years later, we moved again. My children, we were at Brazilian jiu-jitsu class, and they brought some granola for a snack. They shared with their friends, and soon, the other parents started asking if I could make some for their kids. It took off from there.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment I've made is that this business has steadily grown year after year. This business has been built completely by bootstrapping. We've taken out no loans, and we depended on this business to support itself.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing I've observed and experienced is thriving even when things go very wrong. Sometimes life happens, and it's so important to be cool under pressure. Believing in your product, brand, and service is vital to its growth. Making money is great, but you really got to love what you do.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Research, research, and research. Know your product or service inside and out. Knowledge is power.
  2. Alliances build kingdoms. Find other business owners in the industry you are in. Get a mentor and network a lot.
  3. Clearly define your brand. Make it simple to explain in 20 seconds or less. You want people that experience your brand to be able to share the information. The easier you make it, the more clients/customers you will get.
