Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Redd Lashay, CEO of House of Slay Inc., located in Jackson, MS, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a hairstylist and a lash guru. My customers are beautiful people (all-inclusive). I am the SlayBae Gang's CEO, providing beauty services to children and adults. Braids, wigs, lashes - the whole nine!

Tell us about yourself

I started my business early because I knew that I didn't want to work for anybody else. I could always get a job, but I never stayed long. I went into business for myself because making people feel and look beautiful is my passion. My two children are the sweetest, nicest, most amazing children, and I feel they deserve everything the world offers. I vow to make that happen for them, and doing what I love to do is going to get us there!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was taking the first step. Many people let fear stop them from doing what they want. Whether starting a business or going back to school, people let their fear of failure stop them; I did not. I just put one foot in front of the other and stepped out on my faith.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hottest thing that comes with being a business owner is keeping up with all of your legal business. If you get too caught up in the glitz and glamour of having a business, and you don't have someone to help you with your legal things such as your EIN and trademarks, etc. You will find yourself in difficult positions when you're trying to expand or when you're trying to get business loans.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. DO IT.
  2. Don't let fear and dry spells stop you.
  3. Don't be discouraged when your friends and family don't support you. Your biggest supporters are COMPLETE STRANGERS!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Be patient with yourself; buildings don't just appear; they have to be built!
