Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rachel Mzhickteno, Owner of Hot Yoga Richmond, located in Richmond, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is Hot Yoga Richmond. We teach the original hot yoga, inferno hot pilates, and yin yoga, so we have a wide target audience. We have all types of students, including older folks who come to yoga for its therapeutic benefits and elite athletes who come to cross-train.

Tell us about yourself

I took my first original hot yoga class in 2009 while I was in college, and I immediately felt the benefits of the practice. I stopped getting my yearly cold, my stress and anxiety were reduced, and my body felt amazing. I knew I wanted to teach from that point forward. People need movement, they need community, and that's what keeps me motivated and inspired.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My business partner's and I's biggest accomplishment so far is surviving COVID-19 and the mandated shutdown. That was the scariest challenge that we've faced so far. Any business owners who made it through that time period had to work their booties off to make things work.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is work/life balance. Yoga was and is my favorite hobby, but since it's also my job, I have to set some serious boundaries for myself. I always take Sundays off, with no exceptions.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Always be setting goals for months and years out. Be really clear about where you want your business to go.
  2. Don't be afraid of change - it's the one constant of life, and you are more adaptable than you think!
  3. When you can, schedule a vacation and turn all of your electronics OFF. Doing this once or twice a year has helped me be more connected when I am working.
