Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kathryn Goetzke, Founder of Hopeful Mindsets, located in Reno, NV, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I teach the 'how' to hope to companies and college students. My customers are workplaces, campuses, and individuals who care about learning how to manage hopelessness and activate hope proactively.

Tell us about yourself

My background is in branding, marketing, strategy, and psychology. My dad was a retail banker, and he died by suicide when I was 18. I then had my own attempt in my 20s and spent the next 10 years undoing years of trauma before launching my own brand. I started my company and, at the same time, created a nonprofit to rebrand depression, raising over 1 million dollars through the first nationwide cause marketing campaign for mental health. I wanted a suicide prevention program and found that hopelessness is the single consistent predictor of suicide. And not just suicide, so many other things that get in the way of our ability to live a productive, engaged life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Licensing my brand in retail, selling over 9 million products which enabled me to create the first free, global evidence-based program that teaches kids the 'how' to hope that anyone, anywhere, can use.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a business owner, you are constantly facing challenges that must be overcome. As the foundation of hope is having a vision for the future, moving towards it, and finding ways to overcome obstacles and regoal when necessary, my work on hope has been critical to my business success. Depression is high in Entrepreneurs, with hopelessness being the primary symptom, so I am especially passionate about teaching business owners the 'how' to hope.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

If you are going to start a business, write down your goals, make sure you have a strong 'why' as to why you are starting your business, and find someone to check in with regularly about your business goals. Even if you don't have a business partner, having someone to check in with regularly, and writing down goals, make you up to 95% more likely to achieve them. Good luck!!
