Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Abby Albaum, Owner of Hoola Monsters, located in St. Petersburg, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hoola Monsters (Florida’s first full-service hoop dance company, specializing in handmade fitness hoops, classes, and special event entertainment) and Hoola-Fit (Hoola-Fit.com), which is the only American Council on Exercise-approved hoop fitness program in the US. My customers are people who want to get fit while having fun, those who want to become hoop dance teachers, and event producers looking for fire dancing and hula hoop performance art.

Tell us about yourself

I started Hoola Monsters in 2008 after discovering the health and wellness benefits of modern-day hoop dance. The practice is just as beneficial for mental health as it is for physical health, and I’m motivated by sharing an art form that helps people become healthier and happier.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When First for Women magazine ran a 2-page spread on me, my message about hoop dance is a tool to help people who suffer from depression was validated by a clinical psychologist.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being your own boss and being 100% responsible for your income. Also breaking through the clutter of social media and customers being constantly bombarded with ads in an effort to reach my target audience.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Create a business based on what you’re truly passionate about, and don’t give up.
  2. Seek out business mentors for advice. Those who’ve been there before can help a lot and save you time, so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel.
  3. Look for ways to streamline your business. Develop or tap into tools that save you time and work for you 24/7 (like an ETSY shop that can generate sales while you’re sleeping).
