Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in skincare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katie McKersie, founder of Holistico, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Holistico is a women's health practice devoted to clearing your skin and overcoming acne naturally. We analyze symptoms and functional testing to find your specific root causes. We then work with you to reverse these from the inside out. The healing plans we create typically involve individualized nutrition, supplement, and lifestyle strategies. This is the only permanent solution to acne.

Tell us about yourself

I suffered from chronic cystic acne for years after coming off the birth control pill, along with other hormonal and digestive symptoms. It was both mentally and physically exhausting to deal with. I was fed up with the medical gaslighting and short-term fixes. I needed real answers and solutions. I eventually went back to school to study holistic and functional nutrition to use food as medicine and never looked back. Once I learned how to properly nourish and take care of my body, my acne vanished. This is why I love what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is the community I have grown on my Instagram. I couldn't be more thankful for those supporting my work. It takes a village of people to fight for medical freedom and to expose the myths in both the nutrition and health care industries. I am grateful not to be alone in this battle for everyone's health.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's hard trying to please everyone. Freedom of speech is forbidden in today's society. You can't share your honest opinions without getting backlash from someone. I have learned to deal with this sporadic negativity and stay focused on my mission as I have seen my knowledge positively touch so many lives.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My biggest tip would be to get your name and what you do out there as much as possible. No matter how big or small, never say no to an opportunity for growth. Second, be transparent with your community and stay true to yourself. You wouldn't be where you are without your supporters, and they value honesty the most. Lastly, make sure you enjoy what you do! Money will follow if you are chasing your passion.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I am still taking on clients for 1:1 if you are ready to say goodbye to acne for good! You can book your free 15-minute Clear Skin Session on my website to chat.
