Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in holistic care, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dhara Thaver, the founder of Soul Santé Psychotherapy & Wellness, a holistic care service in Canada.

Tell us all about your business...

At Soul Santé, I support adults with various mental health and life challenges through a holistic approach including therapy and counselling, meditation, yoga & mindfulness. My approach is an amalgamation of eastern practices in which I was steeped growing up in India, and western approaches to human psychology that I was immersed in during my academic studies.

What's your background and motivation to grow as a business owner?

When I immigrated to Canada in 2019 I struggled to find a clear sense of direction in my life. I had knowledge and experience as a psychologist and yoga teacher. Slowly as I started to settle in my life here while reflecting on the best way to move forward, I started to play with the idea of developing my own business, which includes my experience as a therapist and as a yoga and wellness practitioner. I completed a bridging program, got licensed to practice as a clinician, and established Soul Santé. What motivates me each day is my passion to put mental health and wellness at the forefront while encouraging people to seek the help they deserve.

As an entrepreneur, what does success ultimately mean to you?

Seeing how much I’m able to empower my clients to create meaningful changes and transformations in their lives is what I consider my biggest accomplishment. Nothing feels better than having your vision take shape in reality and seeing how it benefits the people you set out to help.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being an entrepreneur?

Feeling discouraged, lack of motivation and sometimes even loneliness is hard. Running a business is like a marathon more than a sprint, it’s the consistency and the ability to keep running that matters. In my experience, there’s no magical formula or a rulebook. The only way to learn is through trial and error, giving yourself the space to fall down and get up again and perhaps, getting guidance from those with more experience.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?

1.) Just start- don’t aim to be perfect, don’t aim to have it all figured out. It takes time, so just begin and keep evolving.

2.) Find your motivation- something that is intrinsic and attached to your values. Why are you doing this?

3.) Allow yourself to make mistakes- it’s inevitable. Try to embrace mistakes and failures as part of the journey and keep moving forward.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

My belief is that we all have within us everything we need to become who we want to be. Taking the first step is the hardest but the most important of all.
