What's your business, and who are your customers?
Holistic Athlete is a mental performance consulting company that provides athletes with 1-on-1 counseling, player development workshops for teams, and coaches education about Sport Psychology and mental health. Holistic Athlete has worked with players and coaches of all levels of sport, from youth to professional.
Tell us about yourself
I'm a former Division-1 college football coach who went back to school to become a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and a Certified Mental Performance Coach. As we move forward with athletics, reaching athletic potential will require a great deal of work on the mental aspect of performance, and addressing mental health issues off the field will be critical to a player's success and well-being. As a former coach, I enjoy working with coaches and providing them with the skills and tools to incorporate Sport Psych and mental health into their programs.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Publishing and selling thousands of books, speaking at several Nike Coach of the Year Clinics around the country, and working with talented individuals.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Resistance and stigma that comes with the topic of mental health, particularly in athletics, are difficult from a functional standpoint. As far as owning a business, it's necessary to always seek opinions and guidance to hear different points of view.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find a mentor to help guide you.
- Delegate when possible/necessary.
- Know your own personal blind spots, strengths, and weaknesses.
