Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Edmond Georges, Partner of Hobbiesville, located in Ottawa, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hobbiesville is a collectibles business that specializes in trading cards. We offer a wide range of exclusive releases, as well as rare and sought-after cards from various popular franchises. Our inventory includes toys, collectible figures, vintage, classic, and modern cards from different eras and brands, such as Pokémon, Flesh and Blood, and One Piece, as well as exclusive Japanese products. Our customers are passionate individuals who are looking to add to their collection, whether it's to complete a set, own a piece of history, or invest in valuable cards. We cater to a diverse group of customers, ranging from casual enthusiasts to serious collectors.

Tell us about yourself

I'm involved in a number of ventures in tech, hospitality, and retail. My partner and I saw an opportunity to build an innovative digital hobby shop that caters to collectors and enthusiasts alike. By leveraging our experience in tech and design, we were able to create a media-rich experience that brings the joy of collecting to life through our immersive mobile app. That boutique experience carries through by creating a welcoming and engaging atmosphere in our physical locations that complement the digital experience.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think building a strong brand and customer base, innovating and disrupting our industry, giving back to the community, and creating a strong team of collectors focused on company culture. We've navigated through all the pandemic and economic challenges of the past 3 years and still managed to bootstrap to an 8-figure ARR.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being a business owner is incredibly complex. You're consistently navigating a rapidly changing industry, rising competition, finding work-life balance, employee retention, and economic uncertainty. It's the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Sometimes all on the same day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Product Market Fit: the degree to which a product satisfies a strong market demand and is a critical factor for a business's success.
  2. Competitive Advantage: the unique advantage that a company has over its competitors. Know what sets you apart and what will allow you to outperform your competitors in the marketplace.
  3. Fall in love with the Process: working towards your goals can help you stay motivated, overcome obstacles, and enjoy the journey. Don't focus on the outcome.
