Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kateri Waltermeyer, Founder of Hire This Mom, located in Lansdale, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I offer career coaching and personal branding services to professional moms and moms looking to get back into the workforce after taking time away.

Tell us about yourself

I learned a lot about job searching when I decided to break out of working in a small nonprofit in the management consulting industry. I had a great career, but when I became a working mom, I suddenly found invisible roadblocks to my advancement pop up everywhere I looked. I was able to use the tools and methods that I developed early in my career to continue to advance and find greater work-life balance as a working mom through strategically changing jobs. But I realized that most professional moms did not have the toolkit that I did and were finding themselves stuck in dead-end jobs, burned out, and unable to realize their dreams or live the life they wanted. That's why I started Hire This Mom in 2020 - to help other moms to have fulfilling and rewarding careers without sacrificing time with their families.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Every client that I help is a major accomplishment in itself! That's why the biggest win for me as a business owner is having been able to scale up to a team of 4, which lets me help even more clients than I could on my own.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Sometimes just getting started is the hardest thing. You will throw up barriers for yourself, sometimes in the form of countless online classes or professional certifications, when very few fields actually require these things to get started. Learn to recognize imposter syndrome and how limiting beliefs can hold you back from achieving what you set out to do. Have faith in the value that your knowledge and experience can bring. In fact, it would be selfish of you not to share it with others.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Pick something you're passionate about. While passion isn't necessary for a business, there will be difficult times, and if you're only motivated by money, you will not make it through them.
  2. Plan to scale from the beginning. If your offering or pricing is not something that can be scaled as you grow, you will burn out or find yourself caught in a constant cycle of feast or famine.
  3. Make sure that your family supports you and understands why you're doing this. There will be long nights and weekends, especially if you're still holding down a day job while you grow, and without the support and understanding of your family, the temptation to give in will be real.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

As with anything as a working mom, there never seems to be enough time in the day. It's important to know where to focus your limited time and energy to achieve the greatest impact for your business and not to get distracted by the latest fad or marketing tactic.
