Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hilary Nakao, owner of Level Up Wellness and Physical Therapy, located in Berkeley, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a women-owned physical therapy practice that specializes in breast cancer and pelvic floor rehabilitation.

Tell us about yourself

We are three physical therapists with over 30 years of experience collectively. We have worked in a variety of settings and in many leadership and managerial roles. We wanted to provide a service to a population of patients that are frequently underserved and wanted to create an empowering environment for these patients, all while establishing a standard of care we believe they deserve.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Consistently creating steady growth month to month, being able to stick to our mission and vision, and providing community outreach along the way.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Time management and juggling all of the different roles at once. Being able to manage the day-to-day operations while continuing to have a vision of ways to grow and expand our business and reach. Believing in ourselves and having the confidence in our product/service that the right people/customers will find us. Knowing when to turn work off so we can enjoy our hobbies, family, and friends.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be passionate about what you are doing and have a really clear and definitive vision and mission to guide you.
  2. Find and utilize resources that are available to you. Learn from people who have done this before you (i.e., podcasts, books, etc.).
  3. Go all in and be willing to fail forward.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

We have definitely found that when you have something you love and are passionate about. You are working hard for something for yourself, the work doesn't feel like work, the stress is more tolerable, and you know what your drive and your purpose are for.
