Your Guide to Becoming a Published Author - Highlander Press

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in publication but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Deborah Kevin, CEO of Highlander Press, located in Baltimore, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Highlander Press publishes non-fiction books that are intended to make a positive impact in the world. We guide writers through the process of becoming published authors, leveraging their stories and mission to create a positive ripple effect globally.

Tell us about yourself

For as long as I can remember, I've had a love affair with books and stories. When I worked in the corporate world, I was the person people approached to polish their words, hone their presentations, and clarify their messages. I started out writing web copy and helping entrepreneurs self-publish their books before realizing I was meant to be a publisher in addition to an editor (and writer). I went on to earn a Master's degree in Publishing from Western Colorado University. I have a passion for helping people, especially women, share their stories of hope, inspiration, and purpose - that's what gets me up and at them every morning!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment to date as a business owner is creating and growing an author community of like-minded people who support and encourage each other to get their messages out into the world.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest - and most liberating - things that I've learned as a business owner is saying "no" to authors who aren't aligned with Highlander Press - and trusting myself to know that they will be best served elsewhere. Ultimately, it was learning to trust my gut that has allowed me to grow my business and myself.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Surround yourself with a group of people who believe in you and your mission so that when you falter or have doubts, they can bolster you.
  2. Trust your gut/instincts.
  3. Always be learning and growing.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Believe in your dreams. Trust your vision. And allow yourself to receive all the goodness meant for you.
