Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nash Cisneros, Director of Heights Yoga and Wellness, located in Burnaby, BC, CA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a community-based studio where students, participants, instructors, and teams get to work on their physical and mental health while meeting new friends. Our welcoming and vibrant Earth room is an ideal environment to focus on breathwork, access healing poses, and practice in a community with joyful energy.

Tell us about yourself

My partners, Yuen Wong, Howie Leung, and I came together to save a local staple to see its beloved community grow, stay healthy, and remain connected. We opened Heights Yoga and Wellness Centre (Heights Yoga) at the same location where Modo Yoga Burnaby (MYB) had operated. MYB's closure in October 2020 was a devastating loss for us, so we decided to unite forces and work towards keeping the beautiful studio open.

We knew that opening a yoga studio with a new and unknown name during the pandemic would be a challenging undertaking, but we also knew that the community needed a safe place to practice and come together. Heights Yoga was truly born out of love, community, and hope.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Despite being new, with no brand recognition, enduring numerous closures, and a reduced capacity, we have been able to prosper. We acknowledge that our doors are open mostly due to:

  • An amazing team of dedicated instructors who have gone above and beyond to see this studio offer the healing methods needed by a community post pandemic.
  • Giving and generous members who have helped with feedback and suggestions and by spreading the word.
  • A team who came together for the love of Yoga, stillness, and community, knowing the financial strain that this project would undertake

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Enduring a devastating pandemic that affected our ability to offer the space we knew was needed.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you are passionate about a product or service and there is a demand for that passion, go for it. You will never know what you are capable of until you try!
  2. Fear and Courage can co-exist. Fear is healthy, so acknowledge it and GO FOR IT anyway.
  3. Surround yourself with people who have what you don't. A balanced and complimented team will always surpass the limits of an individual.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

We would love to invite everyone to check us out. Yoga isn't simply a form of exercise that is restricted to some. Yoga gives us access to living a mindful, purposeful, joyful, connected, and fear-less life. It is a way for individuals from all walks of life to heal their minds, bodies, and spirits. So give it a try. We are currently offering a One-month or 2-week Intro promotion that will enable you to check out a variety of classes and decide if Yoga is for you. We have no doubt it will be!
