Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Heather Wise, Co-Founder of SkillfulMeans, located in Boston, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the creator of the Mindful Body Program and co-founder of an organization called SkillfulMeans, where we believe well-being is a human right. I have found that mindfulness is a powerful tool we can apply to our personal lives to enhance well-being. The type of people who work with me are former dieters who are done with the diet culture and looking to develop a healthy, enjoyable relationship with food and their body. They are ready to take the reins back to their digestive health and find a sustainable lifestyle for a balanced weight.

Tell us about yourself

As a certified integrative nutrition coach, I teach and help individuals and groups connect with their Gut Brain (microbiome) to better understand how our bodies work and decipher body cues/cravings/symptoms to develop a more intuitive and biome-conscious way of eating and living that improves digestion and promotes a balanced weight.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For years I was seeing clients one-on-one while working in corporate wellness and knew there had to be a better way. As an integrative nutritionist, I was helping people heal from digestive upset, bloating, reflux, ulcers, IBS, constipation, and losing weight without adding exercise or counting calories, but I was getting burnt out as a mom of two. By creating my online program, I was able to lead a group through my methodology and get the same results with one group coaching call per week rather than weekly coaching calls.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I had to learn a lot overnight, like how to track all my expenses, software, contractors, and customer data so I could make informed data-driven business decisions.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Network and surround yourself with others who already run their own business so you can turn to them for advice and ask questions because it’s a never-ending learning process.
  2. Constantly invest in yourself and in learning.
  3. Balance your expenses and books every month so you can make informed decisions about the business and know what to invest your time and energy into to grow your business.
