Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Heather Armijo, a newborn, maternity, child photographer, based in Katy, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own Heather Armijo Photography. We are a newborn, maternity, and child photography studio located in Katy, Texas. We focus on photographing newborns and all the excitement that surrounds this stage - from pregnancy to a baby's first birthday.

Tell us about yourself

Aside from being a photographer, I am also a mom to four of my own children! My desire to capture my kids through photographs is what led me to become a professional photographer. I know firsthand how quickly we move through the stages of our lives. I love getting to know my clients and being a part of their lives. There's nothing more rewarding than having clients come back to HAP for photographs year after year. I also pride myself on my professionalism. I want your portrait experience to be just that- an experience! From quick correspondence to giving clients all the information needed to prepare for a successful session- I am here every step of the way through this process.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of my biggest accomplishments has been opening my own brick-and-mortar studio space located in the Katy area. Moving into my own space has allowed me to offer my clients more session options. For example, every year, we host a Santa Experience session where kids come visit Santa and Mrs. Claus and really get to enjoy the magic of Christmas. This past year, we saw a record number of 35 families during this special event!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about owning your own business is managing your time. I quickly learned I could not 'do it all,' which is why I brought on an amazing photographer to work on the HAP team, Lindsey Ray. She handles our emailing, scheduling, and photographs our outdoor sessions! She is an essential part of Heather Armijo Photography and helps us both take good care of our clients. No matter how much our business grows, we want to be sure to be there to help each of our clients throughout the process and make sure everyone has an amazing experience!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

If you're a business owner or looking to be a business owner, I would recommend the following:

  1. Having a solid plan. Revisit/restructure your plan as your business grows and changes to keep your goals fresh and help you focus on your current vision.
  2. Outsource areas of your business when you can. This can be when growth causes you to fall behind, and you need to hire additional help in your business or outside your business to help give you more time! This also applies to hiring outside help when you need a professional from another industry to collaborate with.
  3. Be patient! Business growth looks different for each individual and each industry. Know that it takes time, and do not compare your new business with someone who has been doing it for many years. We all started somewhere!
