What's your organization, and who are your members?
Hearts of Empowerment is a nonprofit that exists to equip the community with tools and resources that are not easily or readily available. We believe that every community and the organizations that serve them are important and deserve the right to fight for positive change. Through the strength of collaboration, we provide resources and tools to various causes across the DC Metropolitan Area.
Tell us about yourself
I was at dinner with two of my friends when we decided to go down the journey of creating a nonprofit organization. None of us had any industry experience, but we knew we wanted to create something that could assist our community and engage our following. Four years later, what started off as an idea has grown into an established and reputable nonprofit in the DC metropolitan area. As a BIOPOC-led organization, we understand the need within our community and use our platform to address them creatively and strategically.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
There isn't one specific moment that I can recall as our biggest accomplishment. There have been some amazing moments throughout our four years of existence, such as selling out various fundraising events, being recognized by Forbes 30 under 30, being featured on news outlets such as Fox5 and Telemundo, and more. At the end of the day, I think about the impact and relationships we have built with those who benefit from our work. There’s no feeling like it.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Most of the communities in America and the organizations that serve them find that access to funding and resources are difficult to obtain. These issues are compounded with the navigation of obtaining partnerships and applying for grants, all while attempting to engage the community. Our solution is not only to serve as a direct resource to help individuals, but we also assist nonprofits with fundraising efforts by equipping them with the necessary tools to sustain for the future.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Learn as much about the space/industry you are in.
- Network with like-minded individuals and those who are in the position you want to be in.
- Be genuine with people.
