Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sophillia Tagaban, CEO of Heart Blaster, located in Marin County, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Heart Blaster is an apparel brand, but we are much more than clothing. We have two stores now - Heart Blaster Kids and Heart Blaster for young adults. Our mission is to bring visible consciousness to be good humans and honor culture through creative and meaningful design. We do this through collaborations with artists and youth-focused projects by creating campaigns that are a hands-on experience. These high-quality projects facilitate organizational skills, team building, creativity, and focus on one overall vision. Our projects have been successful and inspiring. The overall experience is my main focus. If we can all inspire one person to tap into their consciousness, creativity, and good nature, the impact can uplift the world. Investing in the youth is an investment in our future. Heart Blaster has grown again this year. We are now a 501c3. This organization will be a center for high school students and young adults preparing for college.

Our customers are everyday people, teens, kids, families, and individuals who share a collective nature to honor ethical values in humanity and treat all people equally regardless of class, culture, or ethnicity. Our customers are friends and contributors to creating a world where we can all thrive.

Tell us about yourself

My business has evolved with me as a person. I think back to being a little girl interested in arts and fashion. For many reasons, I did not get to nurture those parts of myself until adulthood. When the opportunity to build a brand presented itself, it became clear that it could also be a way to nurture community. This is always my motivation. I believe that you have to be able to identify with the people, youth, and communities you are trying to nurture on some level to invest and build communities with confidence and understand their needs. While having fun, getting creative, and learning about each other. My motivation is to empower the next generations to keep nurturing generations to come.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, it is tough to say. I keep educating myself, making new connections, and hitting new goals and milestones to set up my business for success. I am proud to say that I have worked hard, learned much, and done 95% of it independently. My biggest accomplishment to date is learning a lot about myself and my capacity to be a mom, a business owner, a forever student, and a philanthropist. I am just getting started!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Time. It is precious, and it goes by quickly. It can be hard to balance life
sometimes. Family time is important. I love and value not just scheduled family functions but daily moments. I want to keep building memories with my kids. As an entrepreneur, I have to be disciplined with my time, organized, and aware when I've gone down the rabbit hole, haha. I can get lost in my work because I love it too.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Here are 5!

  1. Find passion in your business; it will always be work you enjoy.
  2. Don't be afraid to ask many questions and gain support from your family and friends; network, keep learning, and make new connections.
  3. Keep learning about yourself. Not just in a business sense.
  4. Task by task, day by day. Growing a business is building a brand. The building part is key. Be thorough.
  5. Learn quickly. So you do not repeat mistakes. Mistakes are part of the growing pains; embrace the lessons.
