Tell us about yourself

My name is Teresa Flynn, and I am the founder of Healthy House Nutrition, a registered dietitian, and a certified diabetes educator. Working as a dietitian, I have taken a large interest in helping others find empowerment to enrich their lives with practical, affordable, and sustainable nutrition strategies to achieve optimal health. I hold certification in diabetes education but sometimes refer to myself as a “cocktail dietitian” as I don’t have one niche or focus area. I regularly provide nutrition counseling and workshops around diabetes, heart health, pre/postnatal nutrition, infant feeding, healthy aging, renal nutrition, and more!

Throughout my time working as a dietitian in various community and clinical based settings, I reflected on different healthcare system gaps in accessing nutrition care and want to help bridge the gap by providing more practical and accessible services. Clients find value from the mobile, in-house services. We are mobile for you and can conveniently meet you where you are, whether at home or the workplace! Our virtual services can allow you to watch a webinar or take a nutrition counseling appointment right from your home or work as well.

Healthy House Nutrition values practical and sustainable food and nutrition guidance that is enjoyable, affordable, and nourishing. We believe that healthy eating is not a one-size-fits-all approach and should never be restrictive. Your nutrition journey should be customized to you. Healthy House Nutrition is here to help lay the foundation for your goals, listen to your needs, and create a plan that achieves long-term success.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is seeing my clients achieve success with their health goals and take control of their overall health. I love seeing people get excited about food and become empowered!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of my biggest challenges as a business owner is not having enough of me to accomplish everything. Having a single-person operation is challenging and can become taxing, but I hope to grow the business and a team in the next few years!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start now! I felt like everything had to be perfect before I launched my business. I quickly realized that I should have started a long time ago! The vision in your head of what your business might look like might not actually be your reality once you get started. Your vision will change and adapt to what is best for the business, and that is a continuous learning process.
  2. Take time to regularly reflect on your efficiencies and where you are spending most of your time. Reflecting and researching ways to be more efficient in your practice provides you with more time to focus on other areas like growth.
  3. Permit yourself to prioritize rest and relaxation. Running your own business is very motivating but can somehow present unrealistic task loads that we always seem to accomplish. This can and will lead to burnout, which requires time to recover from. Normalize giving yourself time to rest and relax and focus on yourself.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Whether it be a full-time commitment or a side hustle, running your own business is a lot of hard work, consistency, and dedication. Make sure the work you put into your business sets your soul on fire and exhausts your passion at the end of every single day in the best way possible. You will get out what you put in, so make it absolutely worth it.
