Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jan Park, Founder of Health Yourself by JP, located in Charleston, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Health Yourself by JP is a health and wellness consulting business. I provide nutritional coaching to help people take control of their health. I often serve to bridge the gap between the doctor's office and the patients' kitchen- teaching them how to eat to reverse heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and many other chronic conditions. I believe in empowering clients with the tools they need to feel their best; sometimes, that may be teaching a college student how to eat healthy on campus or maybe the mom who wants to cook healthy for her family. Services include individual nutritional and lifestyle coaching, group talks, seminars, and a monthly subscription for meal plans that include a grocery list and recipes. My customers range from college students, athletes, young adults, and moms.

Tell us about yourself

I was a cardiac care nurse in intensive care units. As the years went by, I realized we were very good at saving lives but not very good at changing lives. I had a calling to be on the preventative side of healthcare, teaching people that the #1 determinant of their health is the food they put in their bodies every day. Since then, I have helped thousands of people regain control of their health, get off of medications, and feel their best again.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Understanding the power of a monthly subscription service.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Sales. Creating the product is easy for me, especially when it's something you are passionate about. But it takes constant hustling to get new clients. Sale is a full-time job by itself!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Understand where you need to price your product to make money. Creating a great product is not enough. You need a sales and marketing plan on how to actually close deals with customers. Start with giving away something free in exchange for their email. Start building a huge email list as the start of your sales funnel. Target that list weekly for sales and build a rapport with them via email. Gather testimonials and post them on the website and social media pages.
