Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rhonda Steinke, Co-Owner of Health Through Nature, located in Gilbert, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our customers want more for their lives; they are looking for better health and more. They know life won’t always be perfect, and they want good health to fare the weather. Our clients want a life of resiliency. We look for imbalances that could be holding them back, understand goals and customize a plan using mostly natural-minded therapeutics to improve outcomes and achieve goals.

My favorite vitality-enhancing modality is Pranic Healing. It has made such a tremendous impact on my life that it has been added as the main service, and classes are offered so people can learn the technique for themselves.

Tell us about yourself

There were few opportunities for employment after graduating as a Naturopathic Doctor in 2007. Starting a business was an opportunity to serve people with the freedom to accomplish it in a way that made sense to us.

I’m not going to lie; there have been plenty of times where employment has sounded appealing. Yet, it is weird; every time we have felt like giving up, something has come along to help us overcome the hurdle, reframe our perception, or show us our efforts have been worth it. We try to take things day by day with always having goals in mind.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Staying in business. So many things can affect a business from progressing that we are genuinely happy that we still exist. To my understanding, a place where many businesses struggle is too many expenses. It is such an easy thing to get out of control, and we have learned this the hard way on this lesson ourselves. Now I am frequently analyzing expenses finding the need vs. desire, and trying to keep things to a minimum.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Work-life balance. Sometimes you get so excited about a new work project that you forget you have a family. Other times family life is so exciting you forget you have a business. Having both has been a tremendous blessing, as sometimes you need a break from both!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You will have to make sacrifices - Sometimes, it is working on the weekends; others could be not drawing an income for a month, a disgruntled customer, spoiled product, or finding a new location or contractor. These are just a few things that you could be exposed to. That is why…
  2. You must be anchored in why you have your business - In order to show up during the hard times, you have to repeat over and over again why you do what you do, so it better be good! Once you know why you are in business, make sure you spend some of your time always engaged in what you love about your business. Never lose sight of the love of your creation.
  3. No blaming in business - Instead: “How could I have handled that situation better.” “What could I have done differently.” “What needs to happen next.” Progress will be made by pointing the finger at yourself and changing. Then be ready to change as you will change, life will change, and your customers will change. Do not get stagnant.
