Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Leah Morgan, Founder of Healingscents Aromatherapy, located in Gibsons, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Healingscents is an aromatherapy & lifestyle brand founded in 1997. Our customers are mainly women between the ages of 35-65.

Tell us about yourself

I took an aromatherapy course when I was 22 and fell in love with the incredible healing capabilities of essential oils and founded the company a year later.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I would say my biggest accomplishment is simply that I have lasted this long! It is so hard starting a business. I had no investors and no prior knowledge of how to operate a business. I quit high school when I was 15 and had a baby at 17. I did go back to the finish, but being a young teenage mom was incredibly challenging. I didn't get any post-secondary education, so I have really just been winging it and trusting my instincts. I have made a lot of mistakes, but I have persevered through all the hardships and just kept my head down and worked hard.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think one of the hardest things is financial instability. I don't get a paycheque every two weeks. The workload doesn't stop even when the money coming in slows down. You need to be able to adapt and pivot on a dime and get creative on how to improve things. It's definitely never boring!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure what you're doing is something that you love and that you feel inspired by every single day.
  2. Stay focused and organized. You can't slack off if you own your own business. If you do, you will fail. You still have to get up every single day and get to work. Have a plan and stick to it. Stay consistent.
  3. Know your numbers. Be prepared to dig deep into the financial aspect of your business and be able to step back and make tough financial decisions when necessary. This might mean laying people off, discontinuing a product or service, or raising your prices.
