Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Rhowena Adolfo Patel, CEO, and founder of Healing Mama™ Co., located in Etobicoke, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Healing Mama™ Co. is revolutionizing the childbirth industry by putting together the Healing & Recovery Regimen from the trauma of birth that doctors, healthcare providers, birth workers, and educators have failed to inform birthing people & partners on.

Born out of my own experience as a first time Mama, I have built Healing Mama™ Co. as the first retailer dedicated solely to new & expectant parents providing the most comprehensive, medically backed, and systematically organized labor & postpartum bags, kits, bundles, and over 150+ products for childbirth, postpartum care, and lactation. Through the Healing Mama™ Giving Program, we are able to support vulnerable expectant parents with the sale of every Labor & Postpartum Bag and Kit.

So, come on over to the Healing Mama™ Home to stock up and prepare with all the RIGHT products for your or your loved one to transition into new prepared. We're making childbirth easier one bundle at a time.

Tell us about yourself

Preparing for the birth of our baby was an exhilarating and completely brand new experience. At seven months pregnant, my girlfriend made me what she called her "Mom Must-Have Bag" because a girlfriend of hers made one for her. It was filled with items I had NEVER heard of before, like Witch Hazel or Padsicles + so much more. At that moment, it occurred to me that in all my baby preparation, I had not done any preparation for myself!

Needless to say, I spent the next month researching solely for me and what I'd be going through. I scoured the internet for "labor & postpartum kits" and was disappointed by the cost to quantity ratios. Most of all, there wasn't a single kit that included ALL the items I now knew I'd need.

That homemade Mom Must-Have Bag gift that was given to me has now grown into Healing Mama™ Co. A safe and trusted home, where ALL new and expectant parents can come and find EXACTLY what they need to not only get through this momentous experience of childbirth and postpartum but THRIVE through it!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The sales have been amazing at proving that the childbirth industry is in need of revolutionizing and that ALL our offerings are a practical solution to this problem. But here's what makes our hearts sing and our souls melt; it's when the parents that have purchased from us come back and share the experience they've had. Sharing that the products that we have armed them with "saved them!" in ways they would never have been able to know without actually going through it. And what brings tears of joy to our eyes are all the pictures we get sent of the new parent(s) and their brand new sweet bundle of joy! It is a true honor to see firsthand the actual impact we have made in their life and their transition into new parenthood.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

EVERYTHING! Nothing is straightforward; there's no linear road map to making it "ALL work" while having the stamina to keep going.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure that the work you are doing, the business you will start, the vision of your work are BIGGER THAN YOURSELF. Bigger than anyone or anything's opinions, bigger than your imagination, and most of all, bigger than your belief systems. So, when $h!t hits the fan, and everything feels like it's crumbling, or if everything is literally crumbling beyond what seems like your "control," the vision and clarity of your work will give you the strength and energy to keep moving forward.
  2. Have an exit strategy. Do not be so attached to your business that you cannot see an end or a transition from it. Just as in life, our end strategy is death. Beginnings and endings go hand in hand, and ignoring one will impede your level of success.
  3. Find advocates, mentors, teachers, advisors, people who have done this longer and better than you have. People that will give you feedback to grow or stop consider new perspectives, pivot, etc. The contribution of people who have been there and done is the most valuable and tangible way to grow, scale and succeed.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Build a community! It is ONLY because of the community that we have built that we are still alive today, quite literally. It is almost impossible to know every person your work has impacted by being engaged, vulnerable, transparent, and conscious. Authentic, you invite them to come into your world and together make your work evolve in ways you may have never imagined.
