What's your business, and who are your customers?
HEAL FROM FOOD seeks to discover the underlying cause of imbalance and develops individualized food, and lifestyle modification plans to reverse chronic health conditions and restore optimal long-term health and quality of life.
I know how it feels to be prescribed medication after medication causing increasingly more side effects. Every cellular pathway relies on nutrients from food to function appropriately. Food is the ideal medicine needed to address the root cause and achieve optimal long-term health.
Tell us about yourself
The unfortunate combination of excessive exercise, under-nutrition, and a devastating heartbreak landed me in the hospital with a stage IV hip fracture at the age of 28. I was placed alongside women three times my age with osteoporosis, and I wondered why this was happening to me. Functional medicine was an unknown to me when doctors prescribed birth control pills to treat my amenorrhea without questioning why a seemingly healthy young girl lost her period. Knowing what I know now, seeking the help of a functional medicine practitioner could have prevented this traumatic injury, physical and emotional suffering and yielded better health.
I first started this business when I successfully used food and herbal remedies to reverse my husband's autoimmune condition called Graves Disease. He was able to avoid the doctor's recommended surgery to remove his thyroid. He does not need medications, which made him feel fatigued and unwell. I am motivated by every patient who heals from the power of food. Observing is a true miracle, and I am grateful daily.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I am proud of successfully launching Immunology For Dietitians & Nutritionists (IDN). IDN is an 8-week course specifically designed to empower dietitians and nutritionists to analyze, understand, and care for patients on an entirely different immunological level.
Inflammation is at the root of all illness processes, and the immune system is the foundation of health. With this new expertise, dietitians and nutritionists can bring their patients to an entirely new level of health with a clearly defined clinical path for patients of all levels of complexity.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Working to avoid burnout is challenging. I am very motivated by my work. I can't seem to turn down any patient or student when I know I can significantly and positively impact their life. Therefore, my workload is high, and I don't take much time off. To counteract this, I make sure to include self-care strategies daily. This includes meditation, yoga, qigong, walks in nature, sun exposure, and more.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Remain the expert. Keep studying, learning, and advancing your skills to be the best within your niche. The intention is to deliver the highest quality product to your customer confidently.
- Accept opportunities as they come regardless of how scary they may seem. Practice putting yourself in uncomfortable situations such as public speaking, engaging in social media, and creating content so these tasks can eventually become comfortable.
- Network with other professionals in your field. Bring value to these professionals with every interaction. This will yield referrals and all types of new opportunities.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Starting, running, and developing a business is a 24/7 commitment. To succeed in this path, you must LOVE what you do. That sense of joy will have to carry you through countless failures with a continued passion to succeed ultimately.
