Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Helio Borges, Founder of HB Consulting, located in Longueuil, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an entrepreneur, coach, and mentor. I apply Conscious Business Agility, a methodology that I co-developed with my partners, to foster a mindset of continuous innovation and resilience in entrepreneurs and solopreneurs to face disruption and setbacks successfully.

Tell us about yourself

I suffered burnout in my corporate career. From a psychological perspective, it is challenging to be in that situation because the person may feel that it was their fault, that they are a "failure." I researched the high burnout rate in organizations and startups and discovered that it is a systemic problem. Disruption, uncertainty, and setbacks are the name of the game in entrepreneurship. Therefore, it is up to the entrepreneur to develop the necessary mental toughness to face them successfully. That's what I do, to teach them to expand those inner capacities.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It is not about the money, which is the result. It is about your client's satisfaction that you are there for them in case they need it.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

You give your customers an edge when you work in innovation and apply state-of-the-art systems, like conscious business agility. On the other hand, you need to invest more time and effort to get new customers than when you are using traditional methods and tools.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't follow the money. Follow your purpose. If you follow your purpose, the money will take care of itself. If you follow the money, you will not have the necessary resilience to support you when times get tough--and they will. On the contrary, your purpose will be your compass all the time.
  2. Take your time to select your partners. Look not only for skills but also for resonance. A toxic partner can derail your business.
  3. Get a good coach. You are the one who knows best about your intention, your goals, and your dreams; in fact, you are your business. Therefore, in times of disruption and uncertainty, you need to have Action Confidence. A good coach will give you that.
