Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hazel Guenther, Founder of Discovering Joy LLC., located in Las Vegas, NV, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Las Vegas. I work with adult clients who have a history of childhood trauma, complex PTSD, and AAPI clients.
Tell us about yourself
I am a Filipino American raised by immigrant parents. I have two children and am married. I love being a therapist as I have a lifelong desire to understand myself and the world around me. I have noticed that growing up in a collectivistic culture, we didn't have access to resources like therapy, and it was not allowed to seek services outside of the family.
What motivates me each day is to see when my people of color clients come to see me every day and feel assured that they are heard and understood. They are given permission to be in my office to share their authentic selves with me. Often times as women, we have been taught to quiet or make ourselves smaller, and what motivates me to work every day is to promote a space where people do not have to make themselves feel smaller in the world. A large part of that motivation comes from my daughters, who I know are looking up to me, and I want them to know what they have to say matters.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to take risks and adventure in creating a business that aligns with my values and creativity.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things about being a business owner is I am in charge of everything. So schedules and routines are something I live by to manage juggling so many hats.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Get therapy- to understand how you work and what you value.
- Utilize your resources- friends, networking, a coach.
- Believe in yourself.
