Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Mekel Harris, CEO of Harris Psychological Services, LLC., located in Bartlett, TN, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Harris Psychological Services, LLC is a private psychology practice that provides: (a) individual and group counseling services for children, adolescents, and adults, (b) consultation with domestic and international organizations, and (c) training and education across mental health topics. Individual clients present with anxiety and/or depressive symptoms, as well as concerns related to trauma and/or grief and loss.

Tell us about yourself

My father's death in March 2020, coupled with my own desire to explore entrepreneurship, led to my starting my own clinical practice on a full-time basis. I have a deep conviction to uplift and inspire others, which motivates me day to day. I am especially motivated by personal loss experiences, each of which empowers and inspire me to create relevant content, provide an array of psychological services, and engage in training and education in this specialty area.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is growing Harris Psychological Services, LLC from a small part-time to a full-time six-figure practice in less than one year.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest aspects of being a business owner is the sole responsibility for decision-making and practice development along a path I've not previously navigated.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, believe in the vision and mission of your business this is what will keep you showing up day-to-day. Second, don't be afraid to seek out a mentor and ask for help. You haven't charted the course as a business owner, so questions are normal and necessary. Finally, set realistic goals each day/week and carve out time for play, creativity, and self-care.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

One of my favorite quotes is: "Whatever scares you, go do it." - Derek Sivers.
