Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cathleen Nichols, Owner of Harmony Health, located in Virginia Beach, VA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have been listening to clients for more than fifteen years in the health and wellness industry. While most clients have similar goals, they all have unique stories, and my approach is always tailored to meet the needs of each individual. Whether I am working with clients in my studio space, corporate settings, in their homes, or virtually, I start by getting to know you. Once I have heard your story, we can plan how to best reach your goals and make your best life become your reality. This often includes a combination of mindful practices, movement, exercise, health, and wellness techniques. You will notice that after our very first session, these tools will be at your fingertips for stress reduction, calm creation, and a greater sense of purpose in daily life. The most common regret I hear from clients is that they wish they had started sooner. To that, I say: "Start today, live better tomorrow" I can't wait to begin working with you!

Tell us about yourself

I first found yoga after my son was born, and I was looking for a gentle way to get back in shape. I found that and so much more! I was able to regain strength, flexibility, balance, and health. I learned to accept and embrace how I look and feel with newfound self-awareness and self-confidence. Throughout this journey of self-discovery, I have also discovered what I am meant to do with the rest of my life - to help others to feel better, live healthier, and be happier in their own lives.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Surviving the pandemic! Throughout the last two years, we were challenged in so many ways to adapt our business model and rethink how we bring wellness to our clients. I have had to implement technology into a traditionally non-technical field. One of the most valuable things a client receives in my field, wellness and yoga, is human connection. Learning how to deliver that through a computer screen was a challenge.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Learning to spend my time working on the business as opposed to working in the business. My time as a business owner is best spent on business-building activities such as opportunity hunting, community relationships, marketing, etc., rather than cleaning the studios, buying supplies, teaching classes, etc.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you feel you have a gift to share with the world, do it! The timing is never going to be perfect; prepare as much as you can, do your due diligence, and then make it happen.
  2. Don't get stuck in the way you think it should go. Be flexible and willing to consider the advice from others, alternate paths, and all possible outcomes.
  3. Enjoy it - it will not always be easy; there will be days when you doubt yourself and your sanity, but try to learn something from every experience and become better because of it.
