Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Harmony Slater, Founder of Harmony Ashtanga Yoga Ltd., located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I work with coaches and entrepreneurs who are struggling with burnout, experiencing fatigue, pain, overwhelm, and anxiety to create more balance in their lives, get their energy back, release shame, and reconnect to their passion and vision.

I use breathwork as a tool to help clients tap into their inner source of unlimited energy by connecting them to a practice of conscious breathing to increase their energy and mental focus, which helps to decrease anxiety, burnout, and overwhelm.

Tell us about yourself

I began traveling to East Asia in 2002 to study Buddhism and Indian philosophy after graduating with 2 Bachelor's Degrees in Philosophy and Religious Studies. I started running my own business twenty years ago and, over time, began struggling with burnout. After figuring out how to restore my energy, focus, and passion for my personal practice and profession, I noticed that I wasn't alone and that there were other multi-passionate wellness professionals who were suffering from burnout. I started helping other yoga teachers and life coaches build back their energy, reconnect to their purpose and passion for their profession, and build their business into something that was more soul-centered. I loved watching this transformation happen. I've made it my mission to help those struggling with anxiety, overwhelm, and burnout to learn to rest, use breathing exercises and meditation practices to restore their energy, and step into a place where they can nurture their most valuable resources - their own self.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Growing my online classes and coaching program to a 6-figure business.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Having to do so many different jobs.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know what feeds your soul, what you love, and can talk about all day long.
  2. Discover what problem you can solve for someone, and then go out of your way to serve that population with your whole heart.
  3. Nourish your own energy first. Building a business is a marathon, not a sprint, so be sure you have a personal practice that is soul-centered and will give you energy and help you feel focused and centered day after day. Regular self-care is essential.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I've been building my business for over 20 years. It's taken on many different phases. Worked as an independent contractor mainly at first, then opened two yoga schools and ran an in-person business, then traveled the world teaching workshops and retreats in over 30 different countries, and now, I'm mostly connecting to clients and students online.

When you're building a business, it's important to start somewhere and then be open to all the different phases and incarnations your personal journey might take. It is not something that happens overnight. It takes some time to find your rhythm and put the necessary structures in place to help you grow. Be patient with yourself and look at all the lessons that come as learning opportunities.
