Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in lawn care services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joshua Davis, President of Happy Hen Lawn Service, LLC., located in Menominee, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Happy Hen Lawn Service, LLC is a lawn and landscaping company that offers complete lawn restoration from filling, leveling, seeding, and fertilizing to high-end landscape designs, including tree installation. We also provide commercial lawn maintenance as well as commercial snow removal. We serve clients primarily in the Menominee, Marinette, Peshtigo, and Oconto areas.

Tell us about yourself

My wife and I had a dream. We both have experience in lawn care, and we were doing the work on the side while both maintaining full-time jobs. Our clientele was growing quickly, and we made the decision to quit our jobs and go into landscaping full-time. We have not been afraid to take risks, and it has paid off. We give 100% every day, and we are constantly growing and learning. My wife, Talia, is always educating herself and obtaining and adding licenses and certifications to our business so that we can better serve the community. I am constantly pushing myself to the next level. Together, with God's help, we have built an amazing business that we are thankful for every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The opportunity to volunteer our services at Mason Park in Menominee, Michigan, has been an amazing experience. We have had the privilege of meeting and working with some amazing people. The project was spearheaded by Larry and Laura Phelps of Menominee, Michigan. They were not only a joy to meet and work with, but they have become wonderful friends.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Learning when to say no. As any business owner knows--when opportunities come your way, it is difficult to turn them away. There comes the point at which you may spread yourself too thin. Learn what your limits are and when to outsource help if needed.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take the risk: One of the hardest things to do is to take that leap of faith to invest in a business.
  2. Don't look back: Every day is a new challenge and a new adventure.
  3. Keep moving forward: Always challenge yourself to go to the next level or learn something new. Never stay stagnant.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Hard work is the key to success. I cannot stress this enough. Anyone can grow a business if they are willing to work for it.
